One of the highlights of this trip was traveling down the Dunau (Danube) from Wien to Budapest by hydrofoil. The one way tickets are only 75 Euros, the boat docks are in central Wien, the ride only takes 5 hours, and the scenery and comfort are far superior to that of taking a train, flying or driving. If you decide to try this yourself, and I highly recommend it, make sure that you show up at least an hour before the departure time. When you get there, do not go to the pier itself, go to the coffee shop. As soon as you see someone show up in the customs booth, get in line so that you are at the head of the line. This will ensure that you get one of the four seats in the front row. The view from there is great! You can also go topside for a view during the trip.
While leaving Wien you will travel under a number of interesting looking bridges
Along the way you will travel through two locks. This one, the first you will encounter, only drops you down 8 meters (24 feet)
We saw a number of vessels from the Ukraine
You will get to see several castles and castle ruins
At one point the Dunau gets quite wide
While traveling through this man-made channel (constructed to protect parts of the shoreline) you actually travel higher than the land - note how you only see the top of this church steeple
Here we are entering the second lock - it will lower us 18 meters (54 feet)
While we descended there were crewmen who manually protected the ship from bumping up against the lock walls
This is the view looking up the five-story height to the top
This is what the boat looks like when underway
Here we are rounding the bend between Bratislava, Slovenska and Esztergom, Hungary. I have pictures of Esztergom from my last trip to Hungary.
This is the village of Szentendre (see my last trip to Hungary)
