Images From my Trip to Pecs
Photos in Album: 74
These are photos I took during the drive from Budapest down to Pecs, a beautiful old town near the border between Hungary and Croatia
This was an interesting wooden church we saw during the drive to Pecs
Naturally we saw lots of fields of grapes along the way. Hungary has twenty-one wine growing districts, so you see wine grapes everywhere
These are some more interesting buildings I saw along the way
Welcome to the beautiful town of Pecs. The romans originally called this town Sophiane, and in the middle ages it went by the name of Quinque Ecclesiae after its five churches (the germans still call it Funfkirchen.) These photos start out at Szechenyi Ter.
The church in the background is the former Pasha Gazi Kassim Mosque, now known as Belvarosi plebaniatemplom, or Inner Town Parish Church. It is the largest building still standing from the time of the Turkish occupation.
This was one of the oldest hotel buildings but is now unused
This is the county seat
This is a closeup of the front of the county seat
These are images from inside the Inner Town Parish Church which used to be a mosque
This is one the entrances to the local university
This wall is interesting as young couples would place locks symbolizing their relationships
These are pictures of the Bishop's Palace
This is a statue of Franz Liszt peering over the balcony
Pictures from Saint Peter's Basilica
These are pictures of the Roman Christian catacombs and their frescos which date back to 350 a.d.
If you are wondering who this person is in these photos he was the guide I hired for the day...
These are photos of the last remaining sections of the old town fortifications, wall and barbicon
