Images From my Trip to Zakopane
Photos in Album: 64
From Dunajec we drove on to Zakopane, this incredibly beautiful resort town in the Tatras mountains. These are photos from the drive there.
Those are stork nests...
The highlanders (which is what the poles call people from this area) are famous for their wonderful woodwork, especially on their homes. It is a sign of status to have a wood home such as this, much more than a stone or brick home. (This is because of the cost of the wood and the labor, compared to stone which they can usually find for free.)
Turn left...
My guide was very familiar with the town and knew the best places to park, so we started our walk at this stream that runs through town where parking was easy.
This is the Parish Church. It is fairly new, only having been built in the 1800's.
One of many examples of the wonderful woodwork on these homes.
This is the beautiful old stone chapel.
This is a beautiful wooden church.
This is an example of the trademark Polish sitting Jesus'
Confession in Poland is not usually done behind curtains, but in view of the line of parisioners waiting in line to cleanse their souls.
This is one of the most interesting cemeteries I have ever visited. Each person has unique plots reflecting the character of the individual.
Many of the graves have these wooden flowers (they last longer than fresh ones I guess)
Next we went walking around town.
There is a wonderful market there.
Next we went to a town near Zakopane where the residents are required to build wooden homes which meet specific standards.
There was an artist there who recreated a typical highlander home replete with furnishings.
This is his workshop.
And here he is at work.
