Tour of the Estonian Submarine Lembit
Photos in Album: 44
On the way to tour the submarine Lembit, my guide pointed out to me this old prison. She proceeded to tell me how her father had been unfairly imprisoned there by the Soviet government. It made the prison more real, more personal.
When I read about the submarine it was advertised as an old Soviet sub. This was only half true. The submarine actually was built by the British and given to the then independent Estonian government Only later, during the occupation, was the submarine put into use by the Soviets. It is interesting to compare the Lembit to the Foxtrot class submarine I toured in Kaliningrad.
The lady in the photo here is my quide in Tallinn. She is a fascinating guide, and I was really impressed with her language skills. She teaches both Estonian and Finnish (Estonian, Finnish and Hungarian are all related, but Hungarian is much more different than Estonian and Finnish) at the University level. She told me that Finnish has 14 cases of declension! And I thought Russian with 6 cases was difficult...
