Vacation Trip 2006
June/July 2006
Photos in and Around Kaliningrad, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia
Photos in Album: 163
These are photos I took around the city of
Калининград
(Kaliningrad) in
Калининград Област, Россия
(Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia)
The city has only been known by the current name since WW II. It is named after one of the presidents of the USSR, President Kalinin. Prior to WW II it was known as Konigsberg (Kenigsberg). It was part of Prussia, which officially ceased to exist after 1945.
This is a brewery in the city called Reduit
This sign says "Reduit - our beer"
This church in the city has the museum to Emmanuel Kant inside. It is currently undergoing a lot of internal repairs, and should be quite beautiful when it is all done. The church has an impressive organ, which was being played the day I visited the church. There was a concert that evening, but I got sidetracked by dinner with my guide which included copious amounts of good vodka :-)
This is a statue of Herzog Albrecht, founder of Konigsberg University
This is to mark where Kant was buried. It was his being buried here that convinced the Soviet government not to destroy the church
Here you can see some of the restoration work being done
Now we are inside the museum portion of the church
This is a sign for a "Good Music" concert of I. S. Bach's "Mass in C Minor" with the "Kredo" Choir
This portion of the wall is exposed so you can see the underlying foundation wall
This painting shows what the city looked like before The Great Patriotic War (WW II)
A painting of Kant
This is a painting of one of the many dinners Kant would hold at his home. He was very strict about the number of guests, though, in order to best facilitate good conversation and philosophical debate
This is Kant's Death Mask
These are pieces of the old portions of the church which were destroyed during the war
This is a monument to Julius Rupp, who was the Konigsberg representative to the Gustavus Adolphus Union, and one of the founders of the "Free Congregations"
Information on the City Gates
This is the "Jubilee" bridge - it was built by Kaliningrad to commemorate 750 years of Konigsberg - Kaliningrad in July 2005
This is a newly built orthodox church
This monument is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War and Sixty Years of Dedication by Калининград Оьласть, Россиа (Kaliningrad Oblast)
A typical statue of Пётру 1 (Peter the 1st)
A nice tourist map in Russian and English
A very popular night club is in this part of the fortifications
This is my city guide - she usually smiled more than in this photo :-)
This is a typical tractor that comes from Belarus
This is a monument to the Great Patriotic War (WW II)
I'm not exactly sure what this array of antennas does...
This is the sign saying we are entering the town of Sovietsk
Here we are waiting in line to cross the border back into Lithuania
These kids kept waving at us from the bus, so I snapped their photo
Here are a couple of photos from the market in Kaliningrad. It is typical for these markets to have the meat, fish, etc hanging like this or on the counter. (Not quite what we are used to in the west.)
