Photos of Siauliai Hill of Crosses in Lithuania
Photos in Album: 23
These are photos from the The Hill of Crosses which is located north of the small city of Siauliai, which was founded in 1236. The tradition of putting up the crosses is said to have started during the time of the Teutonic Knights occupation and was a sign of resistance. During the Soviet times the officials repeatedly would tear down the crosses, and the next day the people would have put them back. Now the Soviet rule is gone and the site is still a popular one for pilgrimage.
