Vacation Trip 2006
June/July 2006
Three Weeks in The Baltic States
Back to Index
This year I took three weeks out to travel across the "four" baltic states: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Kaliningrad Oblast ( Калининград Оьласть, Россиа).

I started out the trip in Tallinn, Estonia. My first day I toured the Estonian Submarine Lembit. The next day I was driven down to the town of Voru to tour a village musem and attend the Midsummer Night Festival. While in Voru I stayed at the Tamula Hotel. (Here are my photos of the hotel.)

The next day I toured the University town of Tartu.

The next day back in Tallinn I had a tour of Tallinn. While I was in Tallinn I stayed in the Barons Hotel. (Here are my photos of the hotel.)

My next excursion was to Haapsalu and Parnu.

Next I moved on to Riga, the capital of Latvia. While in Riga I went on a cruise around the city. While I stayed in Riga I was at the Gutenberg Hotel. (Here are my photos of the hotel - but I would not stay there again and would not recommend it to others - details why on the photo page.)

My first excursion in Latvia was to the towns of Cesis and Sigulda.

My next excursion was to Rundale Palace.

My last excursion on Latvia was touring around Kurland.

From there I moved on to Vilnius, Lithuania (the capital). While in Vilnius I stayed at the Shakespeare Hotel, a hotel I highly recommend to anyone visiting Vilnius.

Here are some photos I took driving around Lithuania

My first excursion in Lithuania was to Trakai - a beautiful little town with a great castle on a lake. Afterwards we drove on to Kaunas, where I stayed overnight at the Hotel Daniela. (Here are my photos of the room.).

The next day we drove on to Klaipeda, stopping off along the way at the Siauliai Hill of Crosses.

The next day we drove on to Palanga and the Curonian Spit. From there we drove on into Калининград (Kaliningrad) . While there I stayed at the Kaliningrad Hotel. (Here are photos I took at the hotel.) While in Kaliningrad I toured an old Soviet Foxtrot Class Submarine Next we went on an excursion to the town of Яантарный (Yantarni), which produces approximately 90% of the worlds amber. Yantar, in Russian, means Amber.

On the way back we toured Panemune Castle and Raudone Castle. The next morning I flew home to the US.
